When it comes to fencing for your home, there are a number of factors to consider before making a decision. The right type of fencing can not only enhance the appearance of your property, but also provide privacy, security, and safety. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind when selecting the right type of fencing in Cambridge and beyond:

  1. Purpose: Before choosing a fence, think about why you need it. Are you looking for privacy or security? Do you want to keep children or pets inside your yard? Or are you simply trying to enhance your property's curb appeal? Understanding the purpose of your fence will help you narrow down your options.
  2. Materials: Fencing comes in a wide range of materials, including wood, vinyl or composite, aluminum, and chain link fencing. Each material has its own benefits and drawbacks in terms of cost, durability, maintenance, and appearance. Think about which of the materials above best suits your needs and budget.  Take a look at each material's page on our site to learn more about their features.
  3. Style: Fencing can come in many different styles, from traditional picket fences to modern slat designs. Think about the architectural style of your home and choose a fence that complements it. A fence that clashes with your home's style can detract from its overall appearance.
  4. Maintenance: Some fence materials require more maintenance than others. Wood fences, like pressure treated pine or cedar, for example, need to be painted or stained regularly to prevent decay and rot. Vinyl fencing and aluminum fences, on the other hand, require minimal maintenance. Consider how much effort you'd be willing to put into maintaining your fence.
  5. Regulations: Depending on where you live, there may be zoning laws or neighborhood regulations that dictate the type of fence you can install. Check with your local government or homeowner's association to make sure you're following the rules.

Example

At Cambridge Fence, we recently had the pleasure of helping a homeowner in the West Galt area of Cambridge, Ontario, who was looking to install a new fence that would provide privacy while still maintaining curb appeal.  With a backyard that backed onto Dumfries Conservation Area, they wanted a solution that blended naturally with the environment, offered durability, and met local fencing regulations.

After an on-site consultation, our team presented several fencing options, considering the homeowner’s priorities—low maintenance, long-term value, and a style that suited the historic character of the Galt neighbourhood.  We ultimately recommended a 6-foot pressure-treated wood privacy fence with decorative lattice top panels. This option provided excellent screening from the trail foot traffic while allowing sunlight into their garden beds.  We also ensured the design adhered to City of Cambridge bylaws regarding fence height and property lines.

Throughout the project, we coordinated around the homeowner’s landscaping schedule and ensured minimal disruption.  The result was a custom-built fence that not only enhanced their property but also complemented the natural and architectural beauty of the surrounding area.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can choose the right type of fencing for your home that meets your needs, fits your budget, and enhances your property's appearance.  Feel free to contact us at Cambridge Fence for a free consultation.
