Unlike vinyl and wood materials, metal fencing falls into a category of its own. Extremely strong and durable and virtually maintenance free, metal fencing offers a classic appeal that can be unrivaled by other types of fencing material.  Of course, the features are slightly variable depending on which type of metal you choose.  Let’s explore them:

Wrought iron - this the Cadillac of metal fencing materials.  The most expensive option, it can last for decades with proper maintenance - we’re talking about lasting half a century or more.  Strong, durable, impact-resistant, it is still considered one of the more high maintenance options.  As soon as rust spots appear, it must be scrubbed thoroughly to prevent it from spreading.  So wrought iron fences are arguably the most durable and beautiful metal fence option, but let it rust indefinitely, which can easily happen, and it won’t add much aesthetic value to your property.  Due to its high price point, many consumers choose to duplicate the look with affordable aluminum fencing.

Steel - this is the next option on the pricing and strength scale.  Steel fencing can be categorized into solid and tubular.  Solid steel fences are just as they sound and are the best affordable alternative to wrought iron.  Its natural strength is reinforced by its strong welded construction. To the untrained eye, they can be made to look like wrought iron with intricate designs, scrolls and curves.

However, just as it can mimic wrought iron in appearance, it can unfortunately mimic wrought iron in its high maintenance requirements.  Any sign of rust must be immediately addressed and treated.  The more affordable steel fence option is tubular steel.  Since it is not solid and can be installed in modular pieces, it is lighter and easier to install.  Tubular steel fencing is galvanized to prevent corrosion, but can easily scratch which, if untreated, can easily rust.

Aluminum - this is the most affordable metal fencing option out of the ones listed.  It is the most lightweight and therefore relatively easy to work with.  Aluminum fencing is naturally resistant to corrosion and its powder coating offers additional protection.  However, in terms of appearance, even to the untrained eye, it’s not easy to fool someone into thinking it’s a wrought iron fence.  The fasteners that hold the picket and panel together are usually visible.  Having said that, aluminum fences have a wider variety of colour options than steel or wrought iron which usually only come in black or brown.  In terms of durability, it’s evidently not as durable as steel or wrought iron.  So if you’re looking for a metal security fence option, aluminum should not be your top choice and you’d be better off opting for steel or wrought iron.

How much does it cost to install a metal fence?  The metal fence installation cost depends on which metal you choose as well as the complexity of the metal fencing installation on your property.  Its upfront cost is higher than other fencing products like wood or even vinyl, but its enhanced durability tends to make that difference negligible in the long run.  However, if privacy fencing is what you’re looking for, traditional metal fences are not usually on the forefront of our minds, unless you combine wood privacy slats or have a non-traditional metal slat fencing.  If in doubt, give our metal fencing contractors in Cambridge to discuss your fencing needs.
