I want a premium low maintenance fence. Should I choose cedar fencing or composite?
Both cedar wood and composite have great features including remarkable durability, strength, resistance to rot and minimal maintenance requirements. Your decision should be based on: budget, your preference of using natural materials and the particular look you desire (wood can be stained but the colours are more subtle, while you can customize the colours for vinyl or composite, although popular ones are still neutral whites, beiges and darks).
I want a cheap fence! Should i choose chain link fencing?
Chain link fencing is a great affordable choice for many property types and even within this category, you have choices in colour and coverings. If a simple barrier is all you need for your home, to enclose a yard or a pool, to keep pets or other animals safe within your property boundary, then chain link fencing is a good option. As obvious as it sounds, it is worth mentioning that this is not the option for privacy purposes, but rather to create a visual and physical demarcation in your yard.
how do i choose a fence and deck company?
When hiring any contractor, it's always a good idea to ask questions. Questions like: "How many years have you been installing the type of fencing I'm looking for?" "Do you have examples of previous work?" "Do you have a warranty?" You can also gauge whether the contractor communicates well with you and is reliable based on the initial phone call and subsequent interactions.
I've decided on a wood fence - what are the pros and cons of pine vs. cedar fencing?
There's something about the natural beauty of wood that can't be matched by man-made materials. Having said that, if you've narrowed down your choice to pine or cedar, then there are some pros and cons to consider, namely price, longevity, propensity to rot and maintenance requirements. Starting with price, pine beats cedar hands down on upfront cost. If you factor in the longevity of cedar, however, the cost per year of ownership drops the longer you have the fence, which brings us to the next point: cedar outlasts pine by several years, even decades. In terms of maintenance, cedar has natural oils that will resist rot, and is easier to maintain. However, with the additional feature of pressure treated fencing, pine can mimic some of cedar's rot resistant qualities.
How much does a fence installation cost?
The pricing can be as low as $1,000 or as high as $20,000. That statement isn't the most helpful, but the pricing depends on the following factors: i) material - are you look for chain link fencing? pressure-treated wood? cedar? - they all come in typical price ranges, ii) terrain - are we installing on a flat ground or a sloped surface? An uneven ground creates a more complicated fence installation process, and will affect the price, iii) linear feet - the more feet of material you need, the higher the cost, although the price per linear feet will typically be discounted the longer the fence you need, iv) any extras - if you need additional components such as a gate, that will add to the final cost.
do you need a permit to build a fence or deck in cambridge ontario?
Similar to other nearby Ontario municipalities, you do not need a permit to build a fence in the City of Cambridge other than a swimming pool fence. However, all fences must follow the specific zoning bylaw for height requirement. If you're looking to have a deck build, it DOES require a building permit if it is at least 24 inches above ground. This is in accordance with the Ontario Building Code.
how high can you build a fence in cambridge ontario?
If you're talking about residential properties, the fence height at the back of the building can be up to 2.1 meters (the maximum heights are different for commercial and industrial spaces). Between the building line and the front lot line, the maximum height is 0.9 meters. For specifics lots, refer to this handy guide for other requirements, including swimming pool fencing measurements. If you work with our expert fence contractors at Cambridge Fence, you won't have to worry as we are up to date on current bylaws and we'll be using our trusty measuring tapes to ensure compliance.
can my neighbour make me pay for a fence?
According to the Line Fences Act in Ontario which applies to all municipalities including Cambridge, technically yes, you are obligated to share the cost of the fence if your neighbour wants to erect a fence on the property line to mark the boundary. The act is there to arbitrate these types of fencing disputes between neighbours. It is a good idea to have a discussion with your neighbour before resorting to outside mediation.
How do i maintain my fence?
This is a fantastic question. To ensure the longevity of your newly installed fence, you'll have to incorporate some type of maintenance schedule. Take a look at our fence maintenance post.
how do i choose what type of fencing i need?
You can have more than one answer as there can be overlapping purposes of fencing, but think about if you want it to:
2. How much maintenance are you willing to upkeep?
Some premier fencing materials are inherently more high maintenance, others less so. You may be trading off some other features such as beauty, versatility, budget and others, but if low maintenance is a high priority, think carefully before deciding on the material. Some popular low-maintenance options are vinyl, composite, and some types of metal. Of course, we care about the beauty and longevity of your fence, so we will advise you of the best ways to maintain your fence and deck.
3. How much do you care about the aesthetics of the enclosure?
This question is similar to the previous question in that there may be trade-offs involved. For example, if you’re looking for a no frills type of barrier that just does the job enclosing a large area or property, a simple chain link fence can do just that. However, if you care a decent amount about aesthetics, particularly if you’ve been beautifying other areas in your home, we’d go so far as saying this type of fence would clash with your home.
4. What kind of budget are you working with?
Of course, if your budget is unlimited, the sky’s the limit on your fence choices. However, if you’re working within a budget, it’s good to know the general hierarchy of prices for different materials.
On the low end is chain link fencing, followed by pine fencing and aluminum fencing, then there’s steel fencing and cedar fencing, and finally the priciest of them all, wrought iron fencing.
- What’s the main purpose of the fence?
You can have more than one answer as there can be overlapping purposes of fencing, but think about if you want it to:
- Provide privacy: privacy fences have little to no spaces between boards and are at least 6 ft to cover your space from prying eyes.
- Add a decorative touch to your property: ornamental fences, decorative posts and caps and gates can add a stylish flair to complement your home, for example.
- Provide security and safety: the material has to be strong and sturdy to prevent potential intruders from easily entering, as well as protecting loved ones, such as in pool fencing.
- Demarcate a boundary between properties: if this is the sole purpose of the fence, you can go with a simple post and rail structure, or affordable chain link fencing.
- Provide an enclosure: this is to keep pets, other animals and children in a space so they don’t wander off.

should you build your own deck or hire a professional deck builder?
Building a deck is one of those jobs that homeowners aspire to tackle themselves, but typically the lack of time, knowledge and experience makes them run the risk of creating something of poor quality that will require a more frequent repair and replacement schedule.
So what’s the takeaway? You’re better off calling a professional custom deck builder if you want a deck that’s built with strength, durability and excellent craftsmanship. We use premium materials like finished wood, and the more recently popular composite decking, which just might outlive some of us - yes, it really is that durable. Not to toot our own horn, but our decks builders in Cambridge Ontario are simply the best.

We absolutely love our new cedar wood fence in our back and side yard. This company came recommended by a friend and we LOVE the workmanship.

I didn't think chain link fencing would actually look this good - we would go with cambridge fence again...they were friendly and they took great care in the fence installation.
- Marvin T.
Our custom deck build was done by Cambridge Fence and we are very pleased with the new deck - it looks like a lot of attention to detail was made, and we're enjoying it now as I type.
